What is an AI agent, and how is that different from agentic AI?

An AI agent is software that uses a large language model to complete multi-step work with limited human intervention. Unlike a chatbot, which responds within a scripted conversation, an agent can retrieve information, reason across it, call other systems, and take action inside a workflow. In practice that means an agent does not just answer a question about an invoice; it can pull the invoice, check it against the purchase order, flag the exception, and route it for approval. Agentic AI is the broader category term, used by industry analysts to describe systems that plan and act rather than only generate. An agent is the unit of work; agentic AI is the class of system. That capability is also what makes governance a prerequisite rather than an afterthought.

How fast can an AI agent actually be in production?

There are two clocks, and separating them gives you the accurate answer. The build itself is measured in days. Should we build our own AI agents or work with a partner?
