Are you ready for SD-WAN?

For Jon Lloyd, Solutions Design Engineer at OnX Canada and CBTS, SD-WAN is a networking technology that unshackles customers from expensive telco carriers and non-agile networks. But there’s still some confusion about what it can do. Jon sat down with VMware Canada to discuss the benefits of SD-WAN and the ideal SD-WAN user.

It’s one of the hottest IT trends of 2019. A Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) allows customers with branch offices to simplify networking and optimize application performance over the internet and hybrid WAN. The popularity is largely due to the significant cost-savings that users see in comparison to a Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) infrastructure, making everyone eager to jump on board. For some clients, SD-WAN unlocks 30 to 40 percent monthly cost savings, making it possible to put those dollars back into the network to make it more robust, adopt a better disaster recovery strategy, and get real-time access into the performance of their network.

But it’s important to understand that SD-WAN can do more than just save money, and there’s more than one use-case scenario to consider.

Beyond cost savings, SD-WAN can introduce a better cloud-based experience to your organization. SD-WAN enables bandwidth expansion, multiple virtualized network functions and automates branch deployments. This technology allows customers to build resilient and reliable networks with multiple connections. You can think of SD-WAN in the same way the navigation app Waze works to get you where you need to be, using the best route possible.

Although you may be traveling to the same destination every morning, there are multiple routes to choose from–and some will perform better than others. When you go to access Office 365 on your laptop or Workspace ONE on your mobile phone, SD-WAN knows your path and looks at which Internet circuit, in real-time, is the best at that given moment. With SD-WAN, remote users will see significant improvements in performance and speed when using cloud/SaaS-based applications.

Who is the ideal candidate?

If you are ready to be free from your reliance on MPLS to connect remote sites to your organization’s headquarters, chances are you are already considering SD-WAN. Among the leaders in the group of early adopters of SD-WAN, who acknowledge that you cannot drive your business to the cloud and manage your connection to the cloud in the traditional mindset.

Conventional MPLS infrastructure often doesn’t meet the organization’s needs when it comes to moving more data and applications to the cloud and scaling resources. However, organizations with 50+ sites on MPLS don’t necessarily need to completely rip out their existing infrastructure to capture the cost savings and efficiencies of SD-WAN over both immediately and over the long-term. You can begin by deploying SD-WAN solutions without changing the existing MPLS network and migrate traffic growth toward cost-effective internet bandwidth.

Flexibility is one of the key advantages that SD-WAN brings to organizations with remote sites, which also means that an ideal hybrid cloud environment does not restrict which cloud provider you choose to host your applications. In this solution, we have provided an access point to every major cloud globally and embedded solutions in clouds such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform and VMware Cloud on AWS. This gives the customer the advantage of choice and security, while keeping consistent policy and orchestration in place.

OnX SD-WAN provided by VeloCloud, now part of VMware solution also helps enterprises meet compliance and security requirements. It uses Deep Application Recognition to deliver control, visibility, and monitoring of applications and users needed for regulatory compliance, without compromising on application performance. Due to its standards-based approach, the VMware SD-WAN solution for PCI compliance may be deployed seamlessly in concert with other security solutions.

It’s safe to say that if your business relies on the internet in any capacity or hosts applications in the cloud, you can’t afford downtime, or the costs associated with scaling resources on MPLS. SD-WAN can help with that.
