OnX Drives High Availability and Mission Critical Infrastructure for Belt Railway

TORONTO, Ontario and NEW YORK, NY: OnX Enterprise Solutions, a leading enterprise data center IT solutions provider, today announced the successful deployment of its managed business continuity and disaster recovery solutions for the Belt Railway Company of Chicago (BRC), the largest intermediate switching terminal railroad in the US. OnX’s IT system upgrades will contribute to improved railroad safety, data security, and more efficient business processes.

The US government mandated transition to a Positive Train Control system by 2015 has caused many railroads to reconsider their IT infrastructure. BRC needed an IT solution for greater availability, disaster recovery solutions, and expanded integration with business processes for employees and third party vendors. As an important hub for all transcontinental trains, BRC’s main goals were to eliminate downtime and increase safety.

“OnX Managed Services has been a great help in our update of the overall infrastructure of BRC’s IT systems,” said Nick Chodorow, Senior Director of Information Systems, BRC. “Historically, technology in the rail industry has been managed with an informal ‘if it works, don’t touch it’ mentality, causing the IT systems’ devices and software to become antiquated and ill-prepared for the current demands of the business. As a result, the outdated IT infrastructure that these systems run on makes it difficult to provide users with the efficient user experiences they demand. OnX helped us modernize our systems for a more efficient and safer railway.”

OnX Managed Services provided BRC with mission-critical IT solutions to fit their specific needs. OnX will manage BRC’s IT systems in OnX’s Chicago-area data center, with data redundancy and disaster recovery based out of Indianapolis. OnX will manage BRC’s data center with a full range of services, including managed hosted exchange, end-to-end monitoring and reporting, hosted private cloud, and iSeries management.

“We are very pleased to provide Belt Railway with the solutions they need to ensure the availability and security of their information systems,” said Wayne Kiphart, president, OnX Managed Services. “Belt Railway is a vital hub for the transcontinental railroad system with extremely complex data infrastructure and management needs. The OnX Managed Services team brought its deep technical expertise and dedication to this client and worked closely with them to get the job done right.”

About Belt Railway Company of Chicago

The Belt Railway is the largest intermediate switching terminal railroad in the United States, employing approximately 440 people. The Belt has 28 miles of mainline route with more than 300 miles of switching tracks, allowing it to interchange with every railroad serving the Chicago rail hub. The Belt’s Clearing Yard spans a 5.5-mile distance among 786 acres, supporting more than 250 miles of track. With Chicago being the largest hub of the railroad industry, very few rail cars travel trans-continentally without coming through Chicago. Owner lines, as well as several other railroads, bring trains to the Belt Railway to be efficiently separated, classified, and re-blocked for cross-country departure. The Belt Railway currently dispatches on a service-driven basis more than 8,400 rail cars per day. At Clearing Yard, employees are able to classify between 40 and 50 miles of train consists every 24 hours. The Belt Railway has the ability to service, by rail, approximately 50 industries. It also offers unique industrial and intermodal facility development opportunities – reasonable land value, taxes, and zoning requirements, planned especially for markets seeking a neutral locale with competitive access. A location on the Belt Railway is equivalent to having a location on each Chicago Railroad.
